The private rental market provides an essential housing option, yet many South Australians face barriers to entering or maintaining a tenancy. Low-income households face the highest barriers, including at-risk and vulnerable people who may, for example, be escaping domestic violence or have significant health conditions.

Half of the State’s low-income households live in a private rental property, and the large majority pays a proportionally large portion of their income towards rent that they struggle to meet other costs of living.

This project investigated the challenges faced by South Australians in or entering the private rental market, particularly those on low-incomes, and looked at options for addressing these challenges in a fair and sustainable manner.

The case study is now available.
