Through the independent, external review of work health and safety systems, the Audit and Verification System (AVS) provides assurance to chief executives and ReturntoWorkSA that safety management systems are in place and operating effectively to manage risk and improve safety practice and outcomes across the public sector.

The AVS requires that public sector agencies demonstrate:

• alignment between work health and safety performance and agency business objectives and outcomes
• effective safety management systems that continuously improve
• risk management strategies relevant to an agency’s risk profile.
