The Public Sector Act 2009 sets out what is expected of the South Australian public sector and its employees. It establishes the foundation for a service-focused, responsive, collaborative and ethical public sector.
The Act also supports employees' rights to a fair and just workplace that:
- recognises achievement
- supports performance and development
- provides opportunities for learning and career growth.
Together with the Public Sector Regulations 2025, the Public Sector Act 2009 helps maintain a high-performing public sector that delivers services aligned with community needs and government priorities.
What the Act covers
The Act addresses a wide range of matters, including (but not limited to):
- principles that guide the operation of the South Australian public sector
- whole-of-government objectives
- streamlined arrangements for the movement of employees across the public sector
- requirements for performance management and development systems
- processes for reviewing employment decisions
- the powers and responsibilities of the Commissioner for Public Sector Employment.
