The Next Execs Program is a 10-month leadership development experience tailored for emerging public sector executives who are ready to deepen their strategic thinking, elevate their governance expertise, and lead with confidence in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. Through immersive learning, expert facilitation, and cross-sector collaboration, the program empowers participants to build inclusive, innovative, and service-focused leadership capabilities, preparing them to meet the complex challenges of the 21st century with clarity, courage, and impact.

The Next Execs Program is a 10-month leadership development program designed to build the capability of aspiring public sector executives. It focuses on enhancing personal leadership, strategic thinking, governance knowledge, and the ability to lead digital transformation in a complex and evolving environment.

Participants can choose between two pathways:

  • Non-award pathway: Focused on experiential learning and leadership development.
  • Award pathway: Includes additional academic readings and assessments, leading to a Graduate Certificate in Public Sector Leadership from Flinders University.

Program modules

The program is structured around four core modules:

  1. Managing Self to Lead Others
    Develop self-awareness and emotional intelligence to lead with authenticity and impact.
  2. Strategic Leadership: Leading and Managing Change
    Build the skills to lead strategic initiatives, manage change, and influence outcomes across systems.
  3. Public Sector Governance
    Deepen your understanding of governance frameworks, accountability, and ethical leadership in the public sector.
  4. Leading in a Transforming Digital Environment
    Explore the opportunities and challenges of digital transformation and learn to lead in a tech-enabled future.

Program structure

Each of the four modules includes:

  • 5 weeks of independent online learning (approx. 2 hours/week)
  • 3 × 1-hour live virtual sessions
  • 2 × 6-hour consecutive in-person workshop days

Participants enrolled in the award pathway (Graduate Certificate in Public Sector Leadership through Flinders University) will also complete additional academic reading, research, and assessments, approximately 4 weeks of work per module.

The Next Execs Program runs over 12 months and blends online and in-person learning to build strategic leadership capability across the South Australian public sector.

The next intake begins in July 2026, with registrations opening in March 2026.

The Office of the Commissioner for Public Sector Employment reserves the right to cancel or modify programs, dates, times, venues and speakers in the event of circumstances beyond its control.

The total investment for the Next Execs Program is $12,500.

This includes:

  • Participation in all program modules and learning sessions
  • Access to individual strengths and behavioural assessments
  • Comprehensive learning materials and curated digital resources
  • Expert facilitation and support from program coordinators
  • In-person workshops, including catering and venue costs
  • Opportunities for cross-sector networking and collaboration
  • Access to post-program alumni events and leadership community

Program costs are not inclusive of travel or accommodation.

The Next Execs Program is designed for high-performing South Australian public sector managers who are ready to broaden their leadership impact and strategic influence.

The South Australian Leadership Academy recognises that leadership in the public sector is diverse and dynamic. The Next Execs Program supports this complexity by offering a flexible, hybrid learning experience that combines asynchronous online learning, live virtual sessions, and short, intensive in-person workshops.

To be eligible for either the award or non-award pathway, applicants must have:

  • At least three years of relevant professional experience in the public sector, and/or
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification.

Participants are typically operating at the ASO8 level or equivalent and are preparing for future executive or cross-sector leadership responsibilities. If you're unsure about your eligibility, we encourage you to discuss your participation with your manager or agency leadership team.
